The number of victims of malicious excavators of cryptocurrencies increased by 44% during the year
The number of users who were attacked by cryptocurrency excavators increased from 1.9 to 2.7 million in just one year. Statistics on the last 24 months show that such programs are increasingly focusing on emerging markets and are using devices from these regions to increase their revenues. This is one of the key findings of the annual report of Kaspersky Lab regarding ransomware and harmful cryptocurren excavators. This report, covering two similar periods (from April 2016 to March 2017 and from April 2017 to March 2018), shows that while ransomware can provide cybercriminals with potentially high but one-off benefits, cryptocurren excavators they give less money, but they are a more balanced and long-term model. Naturally, it is gaining popularity in a cybercriminal environment.
Kaspersky Lab experts have identified a significant change in the cyber-threat landscape: in 2017-2018 there has been a significant decrease in the number of attacks on unique users using ransomware aimed at desktop computers and mobile devices (by almost 30% and 22.5% respectively). Instead, cybercriminals prefer to make money on programs to dig cryptocurrency.
The report shows that the number of harmful excavators attacking desktop computers is constantly growing. The total number of users who have encountered this type of harmful activity increased from 1 899 236 in the period 2016-2017 to 2 735 611 in the period 2017-2018.
Mobile excavators are also threatened - the number of unique attacks of this type increased by 9.5%. In total, in the period 2017-2018, this form of malicious activity was used by almost 5,000 users. For comparison: in the period 2016-2017, the number of such users was about 4 500. The victims of this threat are in particular mobile users in China and India.
