October 1 Emsisoft Internet Security will disappear from the market and connect with Emsisoft Anti-Malware

While ESET, guided by marketing benefits, introduced a new product to its portfolio last year - ESET Internet Security , the Emsisoft manufacturer resigns from the so-called "internet security" package - from October 1, 2017 Emsisoft Internet Security will merge with Emsisoft Anti-Malware .

From the technical point of view, Emsisoft Internet Security and Emsisoft Anti-Malware are based on the same code, the same update files and the same virus databases. From a marketing perspective, Emsisoft Internet Security was designed as an extension of the set of functions available in Emsisoft Anti-Malware. The only difference between these products was the Internet firewall component.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware with a firewall

In our opinion, the reasons for giving up the Internet Security package and adding the firewall component to Emsisoft Anti-Malware are marketing, technical and financial - the producer wants to keep only one product instead of two with identical code.

While Emsisoft Internet Security was definitely a valuable product in previous years, we believe that regardless of the benefits, nowadays firewall plays a very small role in protection.

The manufacturer explains on the blog that their decision is dictated by the fact that the firewall in blocking attacks does not provide as much value as it used to be.

When Microsoft introduced the Windows firewall in the Windows XP service pack it was a bit embarrassing performance - the software was not very good. But with the release of Windows 7, Windows Firewall began to do its work much more effectively. The latest version of Windows 10 does everything you can expect from a firewall. The only disadvantage of this architecture is that firewall rules can be freely edited by any user or software that has the required level of privilege. In other words, if the malware that runs on your computer can take control of the firewall. This is one of the main reasons to keep our own firewall component.

From October 1, 2017, the function of a "firewall" in the Emsisoft Anti-Malware program will be a behavior blocker (Behavior Blocking) - when you try to access an unrecognized application to the network, a warning message will be displayed. Behavioral blocker technology also allows you to block attempts to manipulate Windows firewall rules.

Changes from September 1, 2017

  • On September 1, 2017, Emsisoft Anti-Malware will receive an update introducing a new module - Windows Firewall Fortify.
  • On October 1, 2017, Emsisoft Internet Security will disappear from the market.
  • Users who have licenses for the Emsisoft Internet Security package do not have to do anything. Their software will automatically update to Emsisoft Anti-Malware, moreover, the validity period of the key will be halved: for example, the 12-month license purchased will be extended by another 6 months at no additional cost.

To all those who share the opinion of the Emsisoft manufacturer (that the firewall has a negligible function in protection), we recommend reading the test for protection against drive-by download attacks : when the security program has to deal with unknown malware, very often the last line of defense detecting the attack is firewall.
